Overview

The New York Opportunity Network is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in New York that develops future leaders by introducing talented, public high school students to career development opportunities through relationships with New York City professionals and private sector organizations. The organization sometimes goes by the acronym "NYON".

History

The New York Opportunity Network (NYON) was founded in 2002 by Brian Weinstein and Jessica Pliska, who met in 1992 while undergraduates at Yale University. Weinstein and Pliska wanted to create an organization that would provide talented, New York City public high school students with career development and networking opportunities, to open their minds to a wide array of possibilities to which they wouldn't otherwise be exposed.

The Program

"In partnership with New York City high schools, we bring together a small class of high-achieving students and committed professionals from various industries. The high schools select sophomores that are most likely to benefit from exposure to the professional world and interaction with a special group of their peers."

The key components of the program include: a classroom series in sophomore and junior years, a business plan and entrepreneurship experience, summer internships, field trips to corporations in New York, and college prep work in Senior year.
