Carlyle, nicknamed 'Storky', played for
Derry City FC in the League of Ireland and was an important member of their historic treble-winning squad in the 1988-89 season. He scored what is remembered as a great goal on a momentous European Cup occasion in theBrandywell againstBenfica when he drilled a shot past the keeper into the roof of the net.He signed for
Shamrock Rovers in August 1987 and made his debut on the 23rd at Longford. In total he made twenty total appearances including two in the European Cup.Made his League of Ireland debut for Derry at Cobh Ramblers on the 19th of October 1986 after moving from Coleraine F.C..
