Sushilkumar Shinde ( _mr. सुशीलकुमार शिंदे) (born
September 4 ,1941 ,Solapur ,Maharashtra ) is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is currently the Cabinet Minister for Power in theManmohan Singh government. He belongs to theCongress Party . He is the firstbackward caste person to have become theChief Minister of Maharashtra . He served as Chief Minister fromJanuary 18 2003 toNovember 1 2004 .He was born into a very poor Hindu "Kakkaya-Dhor" family. The Kakkaya cast was a
Maratha caste formed after the 13th century. His first job wassub-inspector of police. He also studied law. Encouraged bySharad Pawar , then a rising Congress politician, he quit his sub-inspector's job to enter politics in 1971. He contested an assemblyby-election fromKarmala inSolapur three years later and won by 25,000 votes. In November that year, the lateV P Naik , then the chief minister, made Shinde a junior minister in his government.In
1978 , Shinde resigned from the Congress Party as well as theVasantrao Patil government and joined theProgressive Democratic Front government led by Pawar. After the PDF government was dismissed in1980 , Shinde remained with Pawar and contested and won the assembly election in June that year as a member ofCongress (Socialist) .Within three years, Shinde rejoined the Congress Party to become the finance minister in the new Vasantrao Patil government.
He acted as
Sonia Gandhi 's campaign manager inAmethi ,Uttar Pradesh in1999 .In
2002 , he contested the election for the post ofVice-President of India against theNational Democratic Alliance 's candidateBhairon Singh Shekhawat and lost.Despite the Congress winning the 2004 Maharashtra assembly elections, he lost the bid to become Chief Minister for another term and was replaced by
Vilasrao Deshmukh . OnOctober 30 ,2004 , he was appointed theGovernor of Andhra Pradesh (Constitutionally, the post ofgovernor of an Indianstate is not a political post.) He replacedSurjit Singh Barnala , who became theGovernor of Tamil Nadu . He served as governor for slightly more than one year before resigning and leaving office on January 29, 2006.Shinde was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra on
