Car terminology

The Terminology used to describe various automotive parts differs considerably between British English and American English

This article identifies common terms used in the automotive industry to aid understanding of different terminology. The American term is listed first.

The hood or bonnet, is the hinged cover over the engine of motor vehicles.

Fuel - See Fuel economy in automobiles Gas(oline) Petrol are the main terms - note that fuel enconomy can be calculated in US Gallons Imperial Gallons or Metric Litres per Mile or per Kilomometer

Lug Nuts Wheel nuts

lug wrench is the USA name for a type of socket wrench used to turn lug nuts on an automobile wheel. In the UK they are commonly known as a Wheel Brace

station wagon, wagon, estate, break, or kombi is a vechicle with an extended rear cargo area.

A wrench or spanner is a device used for undoing nuts and bolts note, British English is Spanner.

A saloon is an enclosed four-to-six seat car body style with a separate trunk, known in some other countries as a sedan.
