John Walsh (archbishop)

John Walsh (24 May 1830 – 30 July 1898) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto, Canada from 1888 to 1898.

Early years

Born in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, Walsh and came to Canada in 1852 to complete his studies at the Sulpician Seminary in Montreal.

He was ordained Priest Priest of Toronto in 1854 by then Bishop of Toronto Armand-François-Marie de Charbonnel.

He served as Bishop of Sandwich, Ontario from 1867 to 1869 and Bishop of London, Ontario from 1869 to 1888 (when Sandwich was renamed to London).

Later Years and Legacy

Walsh left his legacy with the establishment of Sacred Heart Orphanage at Sunnyside, St. John's Industrial School for Boys and purchased land for the establishment of Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery.

Walsh died in Toronto in 1898 and is buried at St. Michael's Cathedral, Toronto.
