"The Calusari" was the twenty-first episode of the second season of "The X-Files" science-fiction television series created by Chris Carter. It dealt with demonic possession and exorcism. The title is drawn from the Romanian word Calusari, referring to a type of folk dancer. In the episode, however, the term appears to have been given a fictional meaning, as the name of a mysterious order of exorcists. The show received an explicit rating in the United Kingdom; that of "18" by the BBFC [cite web

Plot

A photograph taken just before the death of a two-year-old boy yields evidence of some supernatural intervention which piques Mulder's curiosity. When another death in the family occurs, the grandmother of the remaining child requests the aid of some Romanian ritualists (called Căluşari, "horsemen") in order to cleanse the home of evil.

This episode's plot has similarities to and was inspired by "The Omen" film series.

The Calusari in History

The original Calusari were an ancient Italian cult (see "Ecstasies; Deciphering the Witches Sabbath" by Carlo Ginzburg or "Italian Witchcraft", page 80 by Raven Grimassi). It is clear that horsemen cults existed as far back as Ancient Roman times. (For further information refer to chapter 5 of "The Cults of the Roman Empire" by Robert Turcan, Blackwell Publishing 1996.)
