The station was built by the Michigan Central Railroad in 1903, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. A restoration project took place in 1995.
Of the 22 Michigan stations served by Amtrak, Dowagiac was the 21st-busiest in FY2010, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 9 passengers daily.[3]
