Elyada Merioz

Elyda Merioz (1932 - 2004) was born in Israel under the British Mandate of Palestine of those days.As a young person he joined Menachem Begin's irgun in an effort to liberate the country.

In 1967 Elyada was the very first Jewish person to settle in the Old City of Jerusalem after the Six-Day War when the city was reunited.

Immediately upon his arrival to the Jewish Quarter, Mr. Merioz worked on salvaging the remains from the synagogues bombed by the Jordanians during the war. The remains were displayed at a museum he established on Hayehudim Street #1. Among the most important remains were the ones from the Hurva Synagogue. Later on the collection was donated to the Israeli government for safekeeping.

Elyada Merioz later on established the [http://blueandwhiteart.com Blue and White Art Gallery] , which is located today at the old Roman Cardo at the heart of the Jewish Quarter
