Govinda Chandra Dev

Govinda Chandra Dev ( _bn. গোবিন্দ চন্দ্র দেব), or G.C. Dev as he is popularly known as, (January 1, 1907 - March 26, 1971) was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Dhaka. He was abducted and executed in 1971 by the Pakistan Army as part of a plan to eliminate the Bangladeshi intelligentsia.

Early life

G.C. Dev was born in the villate Lauta of the Panchakhanda Pargana (currently Biyanibazar Upazila) of Sylhet, East Bengal (currently Bangladesh).

His ancestors were high-caste Brahmins who settled in Sylhet from Gujrat.

Education

In 1925, G.C. Dev passed the Entrance Examination in first division from Biani Bazar High English School. Later, in 1927, he passed Intermediate Examination from Ripon College, Kolkata. In 1929, GC Dev received his Bachelor of Arts degree with honours from Sanskrit College. In 1931, he received his Master of Arts in Philosophy from Calcutta University. He graduated summa cum laude in both Bachelors and Masters. His Doctoral thesis was titled "Reason, intuition and reality", and for this, he received a PhD degree from Calcutta University in 1944.
