- South Waikato District
The South Waikato District is a
municipality located between the cities of Hamilton to the north,Rotorua to the east,Taupo to the South, Ruhepehu District to the West in theNorth Island ofNew Zealand . It is within theWaikato region.[http://www.teara.govt.nz/NewZealanders/MaoriNewZealanders/NgatiRaukawa/en Raukawa] is the Iwi Maori for this area and goes back 20-25 generations to a person. The number of Marae in the District is 32 and include Papa te Aroha marae, Aotearoa marae, Pikitu marae (Nga-Huri), Pōhara marae (Ngati Koriki), Ngatira marae (Ngati Ahuru) and Tarukenga marae (Ngati Te-Ngakau).
South Waikato District Community Outcomes were published on 10 July 2006 in the Long Term Council Community Plan 2006-2016 under the provisions of the Section 91 of the Local Government Act 2002. Community Outcomes are the aspirations of the District's community after extensive counsultation.The district covers the towns of
Tokoroa ,Putaruru ,Tirau andArapuni . The seat of the South Waikato District Council is at Tokoroa.As at the 2006 census, the district's usual residence count was 22,641, of whom 65% lived in Tokoroa. Putaruru's population was 3765, and Tirau's was 732. The region's population decreased markedly during the 1990s, dropping over 4000 since the 1991 census.
The district's main industries are related to
forestry andtimber production. Several hydroelectric projects are located at the district's western edge.External links
