The Darüşşafaka Association (Darüşşafaka Cemiyeti) is an educational association originally founded to train apprentices. It is one of the oldest associations in Turkey, founded in 1863.
History
Under the Sultan's warrant, the Darüşşafaka Association was founded in 30 March 1863 under the name of "Cemiyet-i Tedrisiye-i İslamiye" for the training and education of needy orphans. Its first activity was facilitating the education of appprentices of the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in their spare time. The name of the association was changed to "Türk Okutma Kurumu" on 26 April 1935 and finally to "Darüşşafaka Cemiyeti" on 3 January 1953.
Current activities
The Darüşşafaka Association's main institutions are the Darüşşafaka High School and Darüşşafaka Sport Club. Currently the association also runs some retirement homes and a hospital, which mostly serves its donors.
The association owns also the Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy, Istanbul that is operated by the local municipality.
