- George Langdale
George Richmond Langdale (
March 11 ,1916 —April 24 ,2002 ) was an Englishcricket er. He was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm offbreak bowler. He was born inThornaby-on-Tees inYorkshire .Langdale first played cricket for Derbyshire during the glory season of 1936, in the process helping them to capture their first and only
County Championship victory.However, he quickly found himself out of County cricket, and, thanks to the break in the Championship owing to the Second World War, was not to play again for nearly nine years, when he returned, playing for Somerset. In his first match for his new county, he took five Warwickshire wickets in an innings for 30 runs and in his next, two months later, against Yorkshire at Taunton, batting at No 8, he scored 146 to enable Somerset to reach 508, though the match was drawn. He continued with occasional cricket in the next three seasons but played for Somerset for the last time in 1949.
One final match in 1953 saw off Langdale's career, a crushing innings defeat for the
Minor Counties . In the same Minor Counties season, playing for Berkshire, he had taken all 10 Dorset wickets in an innings for 25 runs.Langdale remained a lower-middle order batsman throughout his career. He died in
Holbeck ,Leeds in 2002.External links
