Kljajićevo (Кљајићево) is a village in
Serbia . It is situated in theSombor municipality, in theWest Bačka District ,Vojvodina province. The village has aSerb ethnic majority and its population numbering 6,012 people (2002 census).History
There are traces of human existence in this area from
neolithic times. In 1391, a settlement named "Sent Kiraj" ("Sveti Kraj") was mentioned at this location. The town was first listed by the name "Krnjaja" in 1601. During Ottoman rule (16th-17th century), Krnjaja was populated by ethnicSerbs . During the subsequent Habsburg rule, ethnicGermans were settled in the village and they became the municipality's largest ethnic group. During this period the town's German name wasKernei . In the latter stages ofWorld War II the majority of Germans fled the area, and at the conclusion of the war most of the remainder were expelled. Serbs fromCroatia (Lika ,Gorski Kotar ,Žumberak , andKordun ) replaced them. The current name of the village, "Kljajićevo", was introduced in 1949 and derives fromMiloš Kljajić , a popular hero who was born in Kordun and was killed onPetrova Gora in 1943.Historical population
