Licensing Act 1872

Licensing Act 1872

The Licensing Act 1872 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (35 & 36 Vict c. 94).

The Act remains in force and makes it illegal to be drunk in charge of a horse, a cow or a steam engine, with a possible penalty of £200 or 51 weeks in prison.

This act:

#restricted the opening hours in public houses.
#regulated the content of beer
#said that licensing hours were to be determined by local authorities.
#gave boroughs the option of becoming completely 'dry' ie. banning all alcohol.

These policies were enforced by the police.

It was an unpopular act as people felt it restricted their liberties.
