The Pakistan Girl Guides Association (PGGA) (Urdu: پاکستان گرل گائڈزایسوسی ایشن) is the national Guiding organization of Pakistan. It serves 71,478 members (as of 2003). Founded in 1911 as part of Indian Girl Guiding, the girls-only organization became independent in 1947 and a full member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1948.
Program and ideals
The movement aims to help girls develop potentials as individuals and prepare them into useful and caring citizens of the country. The association is divided in three sections according to age:
*Junior Guides - ages 11 and younger
*Girl Guides - ages 12 to 16
*Senior Guides - ages 17 to 21
The Girl Guide emblem incorporates elements of the coat of arms of Pakistan.
Scouting is voluntary in schools, but from September 2007, it will become compulsory, the aim being to have one million youth volunteers to help out in emergencies. The expenses will be bourne from two per cent of exam fees, collected by the examination boards, paid to the various Scouting and Guiding organisations.
