William Aloysius McGowan (
January 18 1896 -December 9 1954 ) was an American umpire inMajor League Baseball who worked in theAmerican League from 1925 to 1954. During his career, he umpired in 8World Series , tying the AL record set by Tommy Connolly and previously tied byBill Dinneen : 1928, 1931, 1935, 1939, 1941, 1944, 1947 and 1950. He was also one of the umpires for the first All-Star Game in 1933. He later umpired behind home plate in the 1937, 1942 and 1950 games. He was also the plate umpire for the first American League pennant play-off game in by|1948. During one sixteen-year period, McGowan did not miss a single inning (2,541 games).McGowan was born and grew up in
Wilmington, Delaware . He died at age 58 at his home inSilver Spring, Maryland , two days after suffering a heart attack. He was elected to theBaseball Hall of Fame in 1992.External links
