Painter and
etcher oftownscapes , interiors, figures and portraits. Also a notable painter of decorative panels. Trained at theAcademy of Antwerp , originally studying sculpting but switched to painting. Travelled to TheNetherlands ,Italy and laterSpain . Debuted in 1873 at the Triannual Salon van Antwerpen. Stayed for a year inParis in 1876. During his time in Spain (1882-83), he made copies from Velazquez. Member ofLes XX ,'The Twenty'. Founder of the Society Aquafortistes and teacher at the Academy of Antwerp from 1886. Painted, predominantly genre scenes from the C17th anf C18th. From the beginning of the '80's painted his own designs, working in the open air and later brown became the dominant colour of his work. He is best known for his work of the old street districts of Antwerp. Powerful colourist and a virtuoso with the pencil. Painted a fresco in theCity Hall of Antwerp (1899). Made an album of etches, all the 'old corners of Antwerp'. Works can be found in theMuseums of Antwerp ,Brussels ,Doornik andGhent .example
