Woodford Green in theLondon Borough of Redbridge . It is designated as a SpecialistLanguage College . Woodbridge High School is heavily over-subscribed, according to its 2005Ofsted report, and is improving rapidly. The school appointed Andrew Beaumont as headmaster in 2004 after the former headmistress Barbara Haigh retired after 16 years at the school, Andrew Beaumont previously held the headmaster post at Watford Grammar School for Boys.It has approximately just over 1,400 pupils and over one hundred members of staff. The school's emphasis on a good all-round education is emphasised from its school motto, "Pride in Achievement". The examination results at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 were the highest in the school’s history in the last academic year.
The ratio of computers to students is approximately 3:1. There is a modern sports hall, a new and well equipped library, the school has one music studio, and two drama studios and well appointed practical laboratories and general classrooms. All subject departments are co-ordinated by the head of department, assisted by a deputy head of department, The two main buildings, Mallards (Upper School), and Wynndale (Lower School), are situated either side of attractive, landscaped grounds. All departments have their own ICT facilities and the majority of classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards that have recently been installed in most of the school.
Curriculum
At Key Stage 3 (years 7-9) all pupils study English,Mathematics, Science, Technology, History, Geography,two Modern Foreign Languages, Art, Music, Drama, ICT,Religious Education, Physical Education and PSHE.Pupils are mainly taught in mixed ability groups,although there is some ability related setting inMathematics and Languages.At Key Stage 4 (years 10-11) all pupils are prepared forGCSE qualifications. Most pupils are entered for 10GCSEs. They study English Literature and LanguageMathematics, Applied Science, a Modern ForeignLanguage and Physical Education. They also chooseoptions from a very wide range of subjects.The subjects currently offered are Art & Design, BusinessStudies, Child Development, Drama, Expressive Arts,French, German, Russian, Geography, History,Information Technology, Media Studies, Music, PhysicalEducation, Psychology, Religious Studies, ResistantMaterials, Building Craft Occupations, Graphics, FoodTechnology and Textile Technology. Students may takeApplied GCSE courses in Business and Health & SocialCare as two of their options. An Additional Studiesoption is available for students who need support withtheir GCSE subjects.An alternative pathway is now available for studentswho wish to follow a more vocational, work relatedcurriculum. College courses, work placements andwork-based learning can be chosen alongside core andoptional subjects.
The school has received many accolades in recent years. The school is a designated language college. In addition to its Specialist College status, it is an Investor in People and an International School. It has received School Achievement awards further to the ‘value-added’ to students.
The Site
There are three main buildings in Woodbridge High School;
Mallards
Mallards is a three-floor Victorian Building situated at the Broadmead Road end of the site. It contains the school's main office, and the departments of science, English, drama and theatre studies, business and art. There is also a small canteen known as "Mallard's Canteen" and a large Sixth Form suite upstairs, complete with a common room for students to socialise and spend their spare time.
Wynndale
Wynndale is the more modern building on the site, and is situated at the bottom of Wynndale Road, although it is accessed by the St Barnabas Road gate. This building holds the school's larger canteen, the girls gym and a large hall with stage (where exams are held). All the humanaties are here, along with maths and technology. The technology block is also attached to the Wyndale building; it contains the music department and food technology classrooms.
The Language Centre
The Language Centre is the schools language department. As the school has designated "Language College" status many classes are held here both within school and also outside school hours for the whole local community. The school also has a sports hall and two large tennis courts.It is no longer known as the Language Centre, it is now known as the Business Block.
Uniform
Boys
Double vented school blazer with embossed school crest, white shirt, black and yellow striped school tie, black V-Necked jumper, black trousers and black smart shoes, overcoats must be either black or navy in colour.
P.E Kit must consist of T-shirt in house colours and shorts in summer, or rugby shirt and tracksuit bottoms in winter, and trainers or tennis shoes
Girls
Double vented school blazer with embossed school crest, white shirt, black pleated skirt or plain black trousers, black smart shoes, black V-necked jumper, overcoats must be either black or navy in colour.(n.b-girls are not required to wear a tie although this is optional)
P.E Kit must consist of T-shirt in house colours and tennis skirt, shorts, or tracksuit bottoms in winter, and trainers or tennis shoes
ixth Form
Sixth formers do not have to wear uniform, although there is a dress code to which they must adhere. However, in 2006, "Smart Fridays" were introduced, and business attire must be worn on this day each week.
