In the reign of King
Chulalongkorn (Rama V), "Mueang " Klaeng was the 4th class city underMonthon Chanthaburi . The old Mueang office was located in Ban Laem Mueang, Tambon Paknam Prasae. In 1897 the office was moved to Ban Pho Thong, at the northern side of "Wat" Pho Thong. In 1908 Mueang Klaeng was downgraded to a district of Rayong Province.Geography
Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise) Mueang Rayong, Wang Chan, Khao Chamao, Kaeng Hang Maeo and Na Yai Am of
Chanthaburi Province . To the south is theGulf of Thailand .Administration
The district is subdivided into 15 subdistricts ("
tambon "), which are further subdivided into 145 villages ("muban ").Klaeng is a town ("thesaban mueang ") which covers parts of the "tambon" Thang Kwian and Wang Wa. There are further 4 townships ("thesaban tambon ") - Kong Din covers parts of "tambon" Kong Din, Thung Khwai Kin parts of "tambon" Thung Khwai Kin and Khlong Pun, Pak Nam Prasae parts of "tambon" Pak Nam Krasae, and Sunthorn Phu the whole "tambon" Kram and Chak Phong. There are also 15 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).Missing numbers belong to "tambon" which now form Khao Chamao district.
