House of Pomerania

House of Pomerania

The House of Pomerania, ["Catholic Encyclopedia". " [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12519c.htm Prussia] "] [Arnold H. L.Heeren. "Manual of the History of the Political System of Europe and Its Colonies". Freeport. 1971. ISBN 0836957695] ( _de. Greifen, _pl. Gryfici), also known as House of Greifen [F. L. Carsten. "Origins of Prussia". Clarendon Press. 1954.] or House of Griffins, was a dynasty of dukes that ruled the Duchy of Pomerania from the 12th century until 1637. The name was used since the 15th century and had been taken from the ducal coat of arms, which depicted a griffin since 1214.

Wartislaw I, from 1121 to 1135 a vassal of Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth of Poland, was the first known non-legendary member of the family. As Pomerania's neighbors, especially the Margraviate of Brandenburg, sought to take over the rule from the Griffins, the dynasty was in constant need of allies, leading to intermarriage with other noble houses, especially those of neighboring Denmark, Rügen, Mecklenburg, Brandenburg and Poland. The most prominent Griffin was Eric of Pomerania, king of the Kalmar Union. The last Griffin ruler of Pomerania was Duke Bogislaw XIV, who abdicated in 1634. The last member of the dynasty was Duchess Anna von Croy, daughter of Duke Bogislaw XIII, who died in 1660.

After the short vassalage to Poland, the dynasty entered Henry the Lion's Duchy of Saxony in 1164 and the Holy Roman Empire in 1181 except for a Danish period from the late 1180s to 1227.

Origins and sidelines

The first known members of the Griffins are the brothers Wartislaw I, Ratibor I and Swantibor. Wartislaw would be the ancestor of the line of dukes that ruled the Duchy of Pomerania until 1630; Ratibor would be the ancestor of the Ratiborides sideline of the Griffens, that was to rule Eastern Further Pomerania ("Land Schlawe") until the line went extinct and the area was incorporated in the Duchy of Pomerania. Swantibor would be the ancestor of the Swantiborides sideline of the Griffins, notable for their castellans of Pomeranian cities.
