Goto Dengo

Goto Dengo

Goto Dengo is a fictional character from Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon".

Goto appears in both time periods of the novel, World War II and the present day (or rather, some time in the late 1990s, roughly when the novel was written).

In World War II, Goto is a Japanese soldier with expertise in Judo and mining. This knowledge leads him to get involved in a huge project in the Philippines.

In the 'present day' (i.e. the late 1990s), Goto is a very successful businessman, running a huge engineering company: Goto Engineering.

Stephenson described Goto (qua Japanese) as "the most admirable character in the whole book", a statement he made to "put to rest suspicions about [his] motives" regarding racial sensitivity.

Goto Dengo is related to Gabriel Goto from "The Baroque Cycle".
