Plot

When Ryan's brother Trey is released from jail, Sandy and Ryan invite him to stay at the Cohens' house for a few days until he gets his life in order, despite Ryan's initial reluctance to the idea. When Ryan, Trey and Marissa go shopping for new clothes for Trey, a security guard is suspicious of Trey's rugged appearance and asks to check his bags for a stolen watch. This suspicion is proven false but not before Trey gets upset and causes a scene at the store. Later, back at the Cohens' house, Ryan sees the watch lying on Trey’s bed and accuses Trey of stealing it. Trey had in fact purchased the watch as a gift for Ryan and, after showing Ryan the receipt, angrily leaves the Cohens' house promising never to return. That night, Ryan and Marissa find Trey at a bar in Chino where Ryan apologizes and tries to persuade him to return to the Cohens' house. Trey refuses but changes his mind after him and Ryan get into a fight with a guy who flirts aggressively with Marissa. The three of them return to Newport together.

Zach returns from Italy in surprisingly good spirits which, given the events surrounding his departure to Italy, puzzles Summer. When Summer finds out from Seth that Zach met an attractive Italian girl named Francesca with whom he is now in a long-distance relationship, Summer is somewhat upset that Zach was able to move on so easily from her. Zach's mother later reveals to Summer that Francesca does not exist; rather, Zach was miserable the entire trip. When Summer confronts Zach with this information, Zach admits that he lied in order to avoid the awkwardness which would otherwise have existed between him, Summer and Seth. Summer accepts his good intentions and they agree to remain friends.

While preparing for the launch party for "Newport Living" magazine, Julie accuses Kirsten of being attracted to their editor, Carter. Kirsten denies the claim but her demeanor suggests otherwise. Later that night at the launch party, Carter, who is also suspicious of Kirsten's behavior, confronts Kirsten and apologizes if the great deal of time they have been spending together has resulted in a romantic attraction. Kirsten is speechless.

Shoshonie tells Ryan about the pornography tape debacle and that she needs $500,000 to pay off Lance. When Julie follows Kirsten's advice and tells Caleb, he agrees to pay Lance with his own money. Caleb personally visits Lance and exchanges the money in return for what Lances claims to be the only remaining tape; however, right after the exchange happens, two thugs who work for Caleb enter the room and force Lance to return the money to Caleb. Caleb also reveals that he had always known about the tape - he had hired private investigators to do a complete background check on Julie before he married her, and had planned accordingly for the day when someone might extort her. Later, at the launch party for "Newport Living" magazine, Julie and Carter inform the crowd that they will play a promotional video on a large screen. When the video begins, Julie's pornography tape is played instead, much to Julie's shock and embarrassment. Lance, working as a server at the party, had somehow managed to switch the tapes beforehand, revealing that the tape he gave to Caleb was not the last remaining copy.
