Harvey Lester Schmidt (born
September 12 ,1929 inDallas, Texas , U.S.) is an American writer ofmusical theatre , best known for composing the music for the longest running musical in history, "The Fantasticks ", which ranoff-Broadway from 1960 - 2002 for a total of 17,162 performances at the Sullivan Street Playhouse. He also collaborated on the 2000 feature film adaptation.All of Schmidt's major musicals were written with lyricist Tom Jones whom he met at the
University of Texas at Austin .Theatre credits
