Land battleship

Land battleship

A land battleship is a very large tank of comparable size and complexity to naval warships. The designation of "land battleship" is also sometimes applied to large armored hovercraft.

Examples of Land battleships

* Tsar Tank - a giant Russian WWI tricycle tank
* Panzer VIII Maus
* American T-28
* "P-1000" a German design of a "landcruiser" (landkreuzer) proposed during the second world war, but never built, to have used a naval heavy cruiser turret.
* "P-1500" a German design of a "landcruiser" (landkreuzer) proposed during the second world war, but never built, to be a self-propelled version of the largest railway guns.
* Panzerkampfwagen E-100
* O-I - Imperial Japanese ultra heavy tank with one main turret and two secondary artillery turrets.

In Fiction

Similar vehicles also exist in other fictional series as well. The later marks of the Bolo tanks in Keith Laumer's novel series of the same name are similar to warships in size and firepower, and Land Battleships also appear in works ranging from Warhammer 40,000 to Super Robot Wars. In the tabletop wargame Heavy Gear, they are called "Landships".

Gundam

Land battleships are a staple of Gundam, they have appeared in nearly every Gundam series to date (though absent in "Gundam Wing" and "G Gundam"). A land battleship typically has many crew members and carries large-caliber naval guns (for example, "Gundam SEED"'s "Lesseps" class includes three triple 16-inch gun turrets). Some land battleships are also capable of travelling over water (especially in "Gundam X", where all land battleships have this ability), but tend to be slower in the water than dedicated naval vessels.
