Strømsø

Strømsø

Strømsø is a part of Drammen located at the southern side of Drammenselva, Norway. About 1600 Stømsø was an island in Drammenselve, but has later been made landfast. In 1728 Strømsø was granted rights as a trade center by the king, and these rights were expanded to full trade rights in 1745. In 1811 Strømsø and Bragernes were united to form the town of Drammen.

On Strømsø we find Drammen railway station, being a junction for Randsfjordbanen (connecting to Bergensbanen crossing the Hardangervidda), Sørlandsbanen (leading to Kristiansand and Stavanger) and Vestfoldbanen.

The main part of Drammen Harbor is situated at Strømsø. Opened in 1925, Drammen Slip og Verksted (Drammen shipyard) was an important part of Drammen's industry until it closed down in the 1986.

On Strømsø we find the old cross-shaped church Strømsø Kirke opend in 1667, but the tower was not built until 1694. The church's architect was Daniel Knoff.
