Edward Gothard

Edward Gothard

Edward Gothard (October 1, 1904 — January 17, 1979) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler. He was born in Burton-on-Trent and died in Birmingham.

Gothard was the elder statesman of the Derbyshire team, having represented Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Championship twenty years earlier. He also had represented Nottinghamshire in a match "against" Derbyshire in 1945.

Gothard made his first-class Derbyshire debut as captain in a match in May-June 1947. The innings victory was to mark the start of a good run for the Derbyshire team, as they finished in fifth place in the 1947 County Championship.

Gothard, 43 years old at this time, was a fixture in the team until the end of the 1948 season, when he retired from first-class cricket. In spite of his age, he was a skilful lower-order batsman. He had one half-century under his belt from two years of first-class cricket.
