Vadiveeswaram is a well known place in Nagercoil in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This place was traditionally an Agraharam.

History

There is a saying that this place got its name due to the Azhagamman Temple, a Hindu Saivite temple situated in the north-east corner of the Vadiveeswaram village. Vadivu means 'beauty' and Eeswara is an appellation of Siva, in Tamil. The two together mean the 'beauty of Siva', which could refer to the area or to the presiding goddess of the Azhagamman Temple.

Vadiveeswaram was also the birthplace to famous composer Neelakanta Sivan. In Thiruneelakanta Botham, he praised Vadiveeswaram as Vadivodu mannumidam Vadiveeswaram and Maathinodu mannudan Vadiveeswarame.

An interesting fact about Vadiveeswaram, when it was still an agraharam, was that the Sankaracharyas of Sringeri, when visiting Nagercoil would first alight, and stay, at the house of a family in Vadiveeswaram, the most prominent of whose scions was S. Subramanya Aiyer, the leading vakeel (lawyer) of Moolam Thirunal Maharajah of Travancore. The rights to this cardinal honour descended hereditarily in the male line of the family.

Vadiveeswaram is located at coord|8.10|N|77.26|E|. Among the prominent streets in Vadiveeswaram are Deep Street (Palla Theru), Big Street(Periya Theru), Dalavai Street, High Street (Mettu Theru), East Car Street (Kizhakku Radha Veedhi), West Car Street (Merku Radha Veedhi) and Sasthankoil Street.
