Roland Wieser (born
6 May ,1956 inZschopau ) was an East German athlete who won the bronze medal in the1980 Summer Olympics inMoscow ,Soviet Union in the 20 kilometer walk, with a time of 1:25:59 hours. Another major success had already occurred 2 years prior, when he became European Champion at the same distance in a time of 1:23:11.5 hours.Roland Wieser had already managed success at an early age, when in 1971 he became the East German youth champion, and in 1975 the European Junior Champion, both in the 10 kilometer walk. In 1978, during the same year as his European Championship at the elite level, he also competed in the East German national championship at the 50 kilometer walk and won.
After his Olympic triumph he was unable to win other medals in international competition. In 1982 he finished ninth in the European Championships; in 1983 he managed tenth in the World Championships; in 1987 he retired.
Roland Wieser next studied to become an auto mechanic, and later became a sports instructor at the Volkspolizei-Präsidium in Berlin.
He ran at the club-level for
SC Dynamo Berlin and trained under Max Weber. During his active career he measured 1.86 meters in height and 68 kg in weight.References
