"Dr. Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr. became the fourth President of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in June of 2003. He brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education, research and scholarship, fundraising, and community involvement to the College.

Under Dr. Saatkamp's leadership, the College has more than doubled its funded assets and endowed funding. The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey has ascended in the ranks of the nation’s top public colleges and universities in the U.S. News and World Report annual survey of “America’s Best Colleges.” The College is prominent among the Best Universities/Master’s category in the North. In addition to multiplying the College’s fiscal resources and elevating the visibility and national recognition of the College, Dr. Saatkamp’s administration has expanded Stockton’s academic and student services, facilities, and the College’s role within the region, state, and nation.

Together with the students, staff and faculty of the College, President Saatkamp has carefully cultivated growth of the College’s facilities. These developments include an extension of F-Wing that now provides an Internet Café and much-needed classrooms and faculty offices. The Small Business Development Center, a state-of-the-art housing complex, the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy, and a new division of business are features that now supplement the College’s resources.Future plans include significant expansion of residential halls, a campus center and a unified science center.

The expansion of Stockton’s offerings include its first ever doctoral-level degree program, the Doctor of Physical Therapy. President Saatkamp initiated the funding for a summer tech academy that offered Stockton’s faculty courses in cutting-edge educational technology fused together with the latest in instructional techniques. Funding for significant improvement of the science laboratories is also a high priority. Dr. Saatkamp has sought to increase student engagement as well. Under his leadership, Stockton now regularly offers the Stockton Orientation Adventure Retreat (SOAR) and two Days of Service, engaging students, faculty and staff in serving the needs of the South Jersey region.

Dr. Saatkamp continues to leverage Stockton's role as a force of economic growth in the Southern New Jersey region through strong positive relationships with fellow educators, elected officials, and civic and business leaders. Stockton is collaborating with The Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center in the development of a new Aviation Research and Technology Park and serves as Chair of the Board for this project. This collaboration together with Stockton's affiliation with Atlantic City Medical Center and the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation Center enables the College to establish programs and services that are mutually beneficial to the students, the community, the workforce and to the economic vitality and well-being of New Jersey.

Dr. Saatkamp is a strong supporter of the arts and the cultural community. Keenly aware of Stockton’s leadership role in world-class entertainment and cultural enrichment, the President continues to champion the Stockton Performing Arts Center, the Art Gallery, and Stockton's Arts and Humanities programs.

An active member of the community and many national boards and committees, Dr. Saatkamp plays a leadership role in comprehensive university and higher education campaigns. He has served as the Chair on the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities Presidents’ Council, as Chair of the statewide Public Employees Charitable Campaign, and as the Public Service Division Chair of the New Jersey Employees’ Charitable Campaign. He is a member of the New Jersey Presidents’ Council, the Legal Committee of the New Jersey State Board of Examiners, the New Jersey Tourism Policy Council, the New Jersey United Way Community Advisors Council of Atlantic County, the Policies and Purposes Committee of the American Association of States Colleges and Universities, and is Chair of the Board of the Aviation Research and Technology Park. Dedicated to the community, he also serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors in the Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey and on the Atlantic City Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Dr. Saatkamp is also Professor of Philosophy at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental & Community Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). He has served as a consultant in electronic publishing, technology use in the humanities, physician counseling, genetic testing, and informed consent. He has also served as a panelist and reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a reviewer for Guggenheim Fellowship proposals. Throughout his extensive travels, he has established research and exchange programs in twelve countries and currently serves as an advisor and member of the Board of Directors for the Center for Dewey Studies at Fudan University, Sangai, China.

He came to the College having previously served as Dean of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts and Adjunct Professor of Molecular Genetics in the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Prior to that time, he was at Texas A&M University where he served as a department head in both the College of Liberal Arts and in the College of Medicine. He began his career at the University of Tampa where he was a dean and held an endowed chair. In Texas and Indiana he helped lead fundraising campaigns that totaled over $1 billion each.

President Saatkamp earned his B.A. from Carson-Newman College, M.Div. from Southern Theological Seminary and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. His work has been presented throughout the United States, and internationally in Poland, China, Spain and Mexico. Considered one of the foremost experts on the writings of philosopher, George Santayana, Dr. Saatkamp is Senior and Founding Editor of The Works of George Santayana and on the Editorial Board of Basic Bioethics. For more than two decades he was the General Editor of The Works of George Santayana (MIT Press) funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. His edited and written works have been published in major academic journals and presses. They have been discussed in The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The Christian Science Monitor, The Village Voice and The London Review of Books. He is a scholar who has received over $1 million dollars to support his research and his publications and edited works include sixteen books and over 40 articles. His scholarly contributions explore American thought, higher education, bioethics, and genetic explanations of complex animal behavior.

A native of Tennessee, Dr. Saatkamp grew up in Knoxville. His wife’s profession is in special education with a focus on learning disabilities. They have two children, Barbara (a physician) and Joseph (an engineer)." Sources:
