- Miscowaubik club
The Miscowaubik Club was founded in 1903 in
Calumet, Michigan . Alexander E. Agassiz was the president of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Co. (C&H), responsible for the copper mining boom in theKeweenaw Peninsula . "Miscowaubik" is theOjibwa word forcopper , used because of the importance of copper to the mining industry in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Miscowaubik Club was created and designed for the gentlemen governing the Calumet and Hecla Mining Co. Members of the governing community of C&H wanted a way to maintain social connections and to enjoy each others' company. The club was originally based on the Tennis and Racquet Clubs ofBoston, Massachusetts . The club containedbowling alleys, courts for squash, billiards tables, tennis courts, dressing rooms, and dining rooms. Today, the club still has all of these, with the exception of the tennis courts. The club is still open for business and is still a place for friends and family to get together and stay connected.ource
