Sounds In The Park is a British music festival.
Created in the late 80's by the stourbridge news editor pete wallace, at a time when the town was put on the map by local bands The Wonder Stuff / Neds Atomic Dustbin & Pop Will Eat Itself, Sounds in the park took place every summer in Mary Stevens Park (Stourbridge)showcasing the local talent or musicians and artists alike. It took place usually the Weekend before or after Glastonbury.
In 1997 after nearly going out of existence a group of people got together to try and breath new life into the event. These included The Dudley HIV & aids support group/The What Centre/The Warehouse Project/
Lifted /The councils CDU dept & many more.Figures that year rocketed from the usual 400 to over 8000(police figure)
As well as the bands in the band stand
Including:Lift/Grassroots/summer street/Rifiki/ The Valentines / Monty Turnbull / 625 Special / ShazVile/Blueliner/Grass / Downward Thing
A Dance tent:
world music stage / graffiti workshops / skate ramp / local artist stalls were added.
The committee had to fight local opposition to the event from the unelected town council.
