Stage is a middle-class retail clothing chain that operates in small to midsize communities in parts of the United States. the chain is operated by Stage Stores Inc., which also owns Bealls, Palais Royal, and Peebles stores. Although for everyone, this store is directed mostly to female junior sizes and male junior sizes.

History

In June 1992, Stage Stores, then known as Specialty Retailers, Inc. (SRI)-- acquired Colorado-based Fashion Bar, Inc., a family-owned business having 71 stores, most of which were comparable to Palais Royal and Bealls stores while the remainder were small specialty stores known as Stage Stores, which already had become part of ARI's operation. In 1996 ARI completed the closure of the other Fashion Bar Stores but kept the Stage name. The company purchased the 45 stores of Beall-Ladymon, Inc. (in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi) and reopened the stores in 1995 under the Stage name. Stage expanded into the Northwest with the acquision of C. R. Anthony Co. and Tri-North stores in 1997, opening many new stores. Also in 1997, Uhlmans was acquired, bringing Stage to Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. All of these newly acquired stores, however, were closed by 1999 when Stage Stores filed for bankruptcy.

Stores with the Stage nameplate still operate in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. Before the bankruptcy, Stage stores also operated in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
