"The Great American Cowboy" is a 1973 documentary film by Kieth Merrill. The film, which won the 1973 Academy Award for Documentary Feature, is about the battle between two rodeo stars for the world championship: veteran Larry Mahan and newcomer Phil Lyne.

This documentary film is far more than just a movie, it tells a small part of the true story about real cowboys who were rodeo competitors. It is one of the only films ever to capture part of the true culture of the American Cowboy and the rodeo lifestyle of the 1960's and 70's. This is a Golden Portion of Americana that would be forever lost if not told by this film or us ol'Cowboys.
