- Pop Ivan
Pop Ivan ( _ua. Піп Іван; _ru. Поп Иван) is the third highest peak (after
Hoverla andBrebeneskule ) of theChornohora (Czarnohora) range, with height of 2022 meters (6,634 ft) above sea level.In the interwar period (1918-1939) the peak marked the Polish -
Czechoslovak border and numerous skirmishes took place in the area. Officers of Polish Border Patrol fought rebels fromOrganization of Ukrainian Nationalists , who on the Czechoslovak side kept numerous hideouts, with guns and ammunition. The rebels were supported by Czechoslovak, and then, in the late 1930s - by the German government.On the peak of Pop Iwan, Polish government built in the years 1936-1938 an impressive construction - Astronomical and Meteorogical Observatory, which was commonly called “Bialy Slon” (“White Elephant”). Today, the construction is in ruins.
Now, Pop Iwan, together with the
Czarnohora range, is located inUkraine .
