September 18 ,1960 ) is an American composer ofmusical theatre in collaboration withLynn Ahrens . They are best known for the shows "Once on This Island ", which was nominated for eightTony Awards and "Ragtime", which was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and won Best Original Score.Biography
Flaherty was born on
September 18 ,1960 , inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania . He attended South Hills Catholic High School where he was very active in the school's acclaimed theater department throughout his student years. He matriculated to Cincinnati College Conservatory and graduated in 1982. When he was 12 he knew he wanted to write musicals. When he was 14, he had already composed his firstmusical score . He was mentored byLehman Engel . He entered theBMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop right after he graduated college. He was also a member ofDECA .Works
