martyr andbishop of Lyon . He was martyred along with Alexander, Attalus, Espagathus, Maturus, and Sanctius during the persecutions ofMarcus Aurelius .A letter attributed to
Irenaeus records their martyrdom; it was sent from the Christian communities of Lyon andVienne to the Roman province of Asia. This letter states that Pothinus was the ninety-year old bishop of Lyon who was seized by a mob along with several companions.Brought before the magistrate, the old bishop died from abuse in prison, while the others were killed by wild beasts in the local
amphitheater . A martyr killed around this time was the slave-girlBlandina . A fifteen-year-old boy named Ponticus was also killed around this time and is also honored as a martyr.ee also
