- Cambridge Bio-Medical Campus
Cambridge Bio-Medical Campus, located in
Cambridge ,England , is one of the largest centres ofhealth science andmedical research in Europe. Managed by theUniversity of Cambridge , the site is primarily funded by theWellcome Trust ,Cancer Research UK , and theUK government's Medical Research Council. It is home toAddenbrooke's Hospital and the university's medical school.Departments currently included in the Bio-Medical campus and involved in research are:
*
Addenbrooke's Hospital
**Clinical Department of Oncology
**The Clinical Investigation Ward
**The Clinical School
**TheWolfson Brain Imaging Centre
*The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research
*The Hutchinson/MRC Research Centre
**University Department of Oncology
**MRC Cancer Cell Unit
*The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
*The Cancer Research UK InstituteIn addition, 3 new departments have already been completed, and are set to open later this year:
*Institute for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism
*New Medical Research Council buildings. There are also plans for
Papworth Hospital , the UK's most famouscardiac hospital, to move onto the site in the near future.Addenbrooke's Hospital
Addenbrooke's Hospital is a large
teaching hospital , and the central focus of the campus. (See main article). The following hospital departments are strongly involved with other areas of the campus in medical research:Clinical Department of Oncology
The Clinical Investigation Ward
The Clinical School
Cambridge University 'sMedical School , established in1976 . (See main article). The Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre
The
Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre was created in 1995 to develop and apply advanced imaging methods to patients with traumatic brain injury. It is unique in being co-located with the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit ofAddenbrooke's Hospital . Since its establishment it has become an internationally leadingPositron Emission Tomography andMagnetic Resonance Imaging centre. The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research
The Hutchinson/MRC Research Centre
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology
Cancer Research UK Institute
The Cambridge Cancer Research Institute was set up in a move to bring the scientific strengths of Cambridge to the forefront of cancer
diagnosis , treatment andprevention . The institute is purposely located in a position that allows researchers to move freely between a scientific environment, the laboratories of the surrounding campus and the clinical environment of the adjacent Regional Cancer Centre, part ofAddenbrooke's Hospital . The institute is home to four main areas of research:
*Basic research, which involves looking into the cellular andmolecular biology of cancer.
*Research intomolecular imaging ,genomics ,bioinformatics andbiomolecular modeling.
*Research that focuses on specific cancer sites, forming a bridge between the clinical and laboratory areas.
*Clinical investigations and trials, including population based studies into screening and prevention. These are to be conducted jointly with the Clinical Department of Oncology and other relevant departments ofAddenbrooke's Hospital .The centre was officially opened byQueen Elizabeth II in February2007 .Institute for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism
