Rubye Robinson ("née" Rubye Doris Smith) (
April 25 1942 –October 9 1967 ) was an Americancivil rights activist .Born in
Atlanta, Georgia , Smith enteredSpelman College in 1959, where she began participating in non-violent sit-ins. She joined theStudent Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) by 1961. She was arrested inRock Hill, South Carolina while protesting student arrests and later joined theFreedom Riders in Alabama.In 1964 Smith married Clifford Robinson, and in 1966 she became SNCC's first female executive secretary. Robinson resigned from SNCC when diagnosed with
leukemia and died in Atlanta shortly after.References
