Prince (
knyaz ) Roman (Revaz) Ivanovich Bagration ( _ru. Роман (Реваз) Иванович Багратион, _ka. რომან (რევაზ) ივანეს ძე ბაგრატიონი) (1778 – 1834) was a Russiangeneral of Georgian origin. A scion of theBagrationi royal family, he was a brother ofPyotr Bagration , a notable Russian commander during theNapoleonic Wars .Born in
Kizlyar ,Dagestan , he enrolled in the ChuguevskCossack regiment as an "uryadnik" (a Cossack NCO) at the age of 13 (1791). He saw his first action during thePersian Expedition of 1796 under Count Zubov and took part in the capture ofDerbent . In 1802, he was commissioned in theLeib Guard Hussar regiment as aporuchik and fought against Napoleonic France during the 1805War of the Third Coalition . At the request of his brother, Prince Bagration, he arrived, in 1806, in Georgia, to meet with a delegation of local nobility, which submitted him a petition expressing dissatisfaction with the Russian administration. Bagration was promptly recalled from Georgia, and sent to the army operating against the French inPrussia (1807). Danube Army and took part in the war against theOttoman Empire , being promoted tocolonel in 1810. DuringNapoleon's invasion of Russia (1812), he served in the 3rd Western Army and fought in the battles ofKobryn , Brest, and Gorodechno. For his valor in theBattle of Bautzen (1813), he received the rank ofmajor general . He was then present at the sieges ofDresden ,Hamburg , andHarburg (1813-1814).In the 1820s, he served in the
Caucasus and took part in the wars against Turkey and Persia. He played a prominent role in the storming ofErivan , a Persian-hold city ofArmenia in 1827, and was elevated to the rank oflieutenant general in 1829. After the war, he settled inTiflis where his mansion was frequented by the local elites and housed, in 1831, the first public performance of "Woe from Wit ", a play byAlexander Griboyedov , in which Bagration played the role of Colonel Skalozub.
