The Rt Revd John Nicholls GCStJ, known as Jack Nicholls, (born
16 July 1943 ) is a BritishAnglican clergy and the currentBishop of Sheffield .The son of James Williams and Nellie Nicholls was educated in
Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School , King's College, London andSt Boniface College, Warminster .Nicholls was curate of
St Clements with St Cyprian ,Salford from 1967 to 1969, curate ofAll Saints and Martyrs ,Manchester from 1969 to 1972, andvicar from 1972 to 1978. Between 1978 and 1983, he was director of pastoral studies at theCollege of the Resurrection ,Mirfield and between 1983 and 1990Canon Residentiary ofManchester Cathedral . In 1990, he became Suffragan Bishop of Lancaster, a post he held until1997 , when he was appointed 6th Bishop of Sheffield.In
1995 Nicholls was allegedly 'outed' by the gay rights groupOutrage! as one of ten Church of England bishops who it was claimed werehomosexual .He was introduced in the
House of Lords as aLord Spiritual on4 March 2003 .
