Big Joan are a band formed in Southampton in 1999 and currently based in Bristol. They play a distinctive, bass-heavy style of rock music. They have played at free parties and breakcore-orientated club nights as well as venues on the indie circuit.

Though they have released material on other labels, the main outlet for their music is their own Blood Red Sounds imprint which has also released music by bands such as Mooz, Geisha and Hunting Lodge.

They have released one album and two EPs, tracks from which have been given airplay by DJs such as BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens and the late John Peel. Their most recent release, The Flood EP, is a collaboration between the band and other artists; namely Parasite, My Ambulance Is On Fire, Shitmat, Terry Edwards,Twocsinak and Bronnt Industrial Kapital. A second album is currently in production and expected to be released in 2009.

Big Joan's German singer has been known as Annette Berlin since she was mistakenly credited under that name on a record by the group Madnomad. She was also a member of Male, a female rock duo who split up in late 2006 and has also played drums for The She Creatures, Rose Kemp and Katy Tucker. Annette has recently embarked on a solo project.

The other three quarters of Big Joan are English. Adam (guitar & synth) and Simon (bass guitar) were founding members of Bristol's now defunct Choke collective. Simon has also played with Steveless and Shooting At Unarmed Men while Adam is an occasional member of The Satanic Funeral Aftershow Party Band. Keith (drums) has played with outfits as diverse as Hookers For Jesus and The Fabrics. Keith and Adam are currently working on new live band with friends from Screen and Kilka Serco, with the working title The Old Grey Whistle Posse.
