Rudong County (Chinese: 如东县;
Pinyin : Rúdōng Xiàn) is a county inJiangsu Province ofPeople's Republic of China . It is located at the opposite side of theYangtze River toShanghai . The county is named as Ru (Rugao County)and dong (east) because geographically Rudong is located to the east ofRugao county and was once one part of it.The county has a seat named
Juegang township. Rudong has totally 15 townships including Juegang.The county has a long history, which can be dated from the period of springs and autumns. The ancient name of the place is Fuhaizhou, which means a small sand island in the ocean.
The county has many migrants from the south of the Yangtse River (Changjiang River), so there are mainly two dialects in this region: the Rudonghua which belongs to the
Jianghuai mandarin and the Shadihua (Wu: Sodiwo IPA2|so di ɯo) which belongs to the Wu language.
