lake on theColumbia River in theUnited States , between theU.S. state s ofWashington andOregon . It was created in 1957 with the construction ofThe Dalles Dam near theThe Dalles, Oregon . Its filling drowned the former site ofCelilo Falls and the neighboringfishing and trade village sites. Celilo Village, a small, poverty-ridden community of Native Americans, still exists today, though it is no longer the thriving cultural and economic center it once was.
