San Girolamo dei Croati (
Saint Jerome of theCroats ) [Formerly known as San Girolamo degli Schiavoni, St Jerome of theSlavs - changed after Croatia gained independence fromYugoslavia ; also known as San Girolamo degli Illirici, St Jerome of theIllyria ns.] is the national Catholic church ofCroatia on Via Tomacelli in theCampus Martius ,Rome .It was first built in
1587 for the refugees from areas ruled by the Turks, and dedicated to St Jerome, who was fromDalmatia . The land had been given to them in1453 (the year of theFall of Constantinople ) byPope Nicholas V , for the construction of a hospice. It is now a chapel of theCroatian College and is only open to visitors by arrangement with the College.The next to last titular of the church was
Franjo Kuharic , who died on11 March 2002 . The present titular is Josip Cardinal Bozanic, who was created cardinal on21 October 2003 .References
