James Bovard

James Bovard

James Bovard is a bestselling libertarian author and lecturer, whose political commentary targets examples of waste, failures, corruption, cronyism and abuses of power in the U.S. government, although he sometimes cites other national governments in doing similar misdeeds.

He is the author of "Attention Deficit Democracy", and eight other books. He has written for the "New York Times", "Wall Street Journal", "Washington Post", "New Republic", "Reader's Digest", "The American Conservative", and many other publications. His books have been translated into Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, and Korean.

Critical Acclaim

The "Wall Street Journal" called Bovard "the roving inspector general of the modern state," and "Washington Post" columnist George Will called him a "one-man truth squad." His 1994 book "Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty" received the Free Press Association’s Mencken Award as Book of the Year. His "Terrorism and Tyranny" won the Lysander Spooner Award for the Best Book on Liberty in 2003. He received the Thomas Szasz Award for Civil Liberties work, awarded by the Center for Independent Thought, and the Freedom Fund Award from the Firearms Civil Rights Defense Fund of the National Rifle Association.

Criticism

Bovard's writings have been publicly denounced by the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Postmaster General, and the chiefs of the U.S. International Trade Commission, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, multiple Commissioners of the Internal Revenue Service, and the chair of Congressional Black Caucus [ [http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Feature-Article.htm?InfoNo=016990 "Declare Your Independence" Radio Archive - April 1st 2007 - James Bovard & Jim Lesczynski ] ] [ [http://cei.org/people/james-bovard Competitive Enterprise Institute ] ] as well as by many congressmen. Bovard has claimed that he would welcome any honest criticism by fellow libertarians, but to date has received no open criticism by libertarians or constitutionalists. He has personally listed all the criticism from government agencies and officials, and seems to hold it in esteem that criticisms of his works from the U.S. government are fact that abusive government officials have been put on notice.
