Stanisław Poniatowski (1754–1833)

Stanisław Poniatowski (1754–1833)

Prince Stanisław Poniatowski (Warsaw, November 23, 1754 - Florence, February 13, 1833) was a Polish szlachcic (nobleman).

A Polish prince, member of the Poniatowski family. Commander of the Foot Guard of the Crown ("szef gwardii pieszej koronnej"), Grand Treasurer of Lithuania ("podskarbi wielki litewski") 1784–1791, Starost of Stryj ("starost stryjski"). He was a nephew of the last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Stanisław II August, who saw in him a possible successor.

Became Knight of the Order of White Eagle on December 8, 1773. Very well educated and well-travelled, particularly interested in economy and arts, he was not very popular with the nobility (szlachta) who perceived him as arrogant. After the Partitions of Poland he emigrated to Italy, where he lived in Rome, and then in Florence. He is the ancestor of the present members of the Poniatowski family bearing the title of Fürst Poniatowski or Principe Poniatowski di Monterotondo.

He had issue by Cassandra Luci (Rome, 1785 - Florence, 1863); some sources state that he married her in Rome in 1806, but apparently they never married and she was married to Vicenzo Venturini; he left issue, the Princes Poniatowski in the Empire of Austria and Counts and Princes of Monterotondo in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany:

* Isabella Luci (c. 1805 -), married firstly in January/February 1821 Prospero Conte Bentivoglio (- 1821), without issue, and secondly in 1822 Zanobio Cavaliere Ricci (- October 16, 1844)
* Michele Luci, died young
* "Carlo" Luci, later Poniatowski, legitimized in 1847, created 1st Conte di Monterotondo by the Grand Duke of Tuscany on November 20, 1847, 1st Principe di Monterotondo by the Grand Duke of Tuscany and 1st Fürst Poniatowski by the Emperor of Austria both on November 19, 1850 (Rome, August 4, 1808 - San Pancrazio, July 23, 1887), married in Florence, September 21, 1831 Elisa Napoleone Montecatini (Lucca, November 4, 1808-Lucca, April 18, 1893), without issue
* "Giuseppe" Michele Saverio Francesco Giovanni Luci, later Poniatowski, legitimized in 1847, created 2nd Conte di Monterotondo by the Grand Duke of Tuscany on November 20, 1847, 2nd Principe di Monterotondo by the Grand Duke of Tuscany and 2nd Fürst Poniatowski by the Emperor of Austria both on November 19, 1850 (Rome, February 21, 1816 - London, July 4, 1873), married in 1834 Matilda Contessa Perotti (1814 - February 1875), and had issue, an only son:
** "Stanislaus August" Friedrich Joseph Telemach Luci, later Poniatowski, 3rd Fürst Poniatowski, 3rd Principe di Monterotondo (Florence, November 9, 1835 - Paris, January 6, 1908), married in Paris, June 11, 1856 Louise Le Hon (Paris, July 15, 1838 - Paris, February 9, 1931), and had issue; she was illegitimate daughter of the Duc de Morny, himself the illegitimate son of Auguste Charles Joseph Comte de Flahaut de La Billarderie by Hortense, Queen of Holland, and therefore half-brother of Emperor Napoleon III
