John Stewart Hobhouse, Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough, PC, (
31 January 1932 –15 March 2004 ), was a British judge andLaw Lord .He was born in
Mossley Hill ,Liverpool . He was educated at St Andrew's,Pangbourne , and Eton. After working abroad inAustralia andNew Zealand on a sheep farm, Hobhouse returned toChrist Church, Oxford in 1951. He became abarrister and was called to the Bar byInner Temple in 1955. He later became aBencher .Hobhouse was made a
High Court Judge in 1982 and received the customaryknighthood . He was made aLord Justice of Appeal in 1993, when he was also made a member of thePrivy Council .On
1 October 1998 he was appointed as aLord of Appeal in Ordinary , becoming alife peer as Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough, of Woodborough in the County ofWiltshire .
