History
Mountain View High School was built to alleviate overcrowding at Marana High School. Building was completed in 1986, which was the first year it opened. Tortolita Middle School students had a contest to determine the name, mascot, and colors of the new high school. They chose Mountain View as the name, the mountain lion as the mascot, and silver and black as the school colors. At that time, there were no other schools in the state with those colors. In 2005 red was added as an accent color by Associate Principal Susan Sloan.
Mountain View opened as a 7th – 9th grade school and added a grade and dropped a grade each year until it became 9th – 12th. Year one was 7th – 9th, year two 8th – 10th, year three 9th – 11th, and year four 9th – 12th. The original 7th graders were at MVHS for 7 years. The first graduating class graduated in 1990.
When Mountain View opened, teachers were recruited from Tortolita Middle School, Marana High School, and new hires from outside of the district. Some staff have been so impressed with MVHS that they have been here since the beginning. Currently, Susan Sloan, Dave Duncan, Susan Mitchell, Mike Goss, and Carolyn Maycher remain from the original team. Students have been equally impressed with MVHS. Over the years, 10 former students have received their teaching credentials and returned to Mountain View as teachers themselves.
Since its inception, Mountain View has been an award winning school. The architects that designed the school campus won an award for its design. MVHS has also been noted for academic achievement. In 2000, the school was designated an A+ School, an award given by the Arizona Educational Foundation “to celebrate and recognize educational excellence.” Mountain View offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students and boasts eight state championships in Boys Soccer, Boys Football, Girls Cross Country, Boys Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Girls Track & Field (twice), and Boys Track & Field.
