Yehuda Gilad has performed with the
Israel Chamber Orchestra and theLos Angeles Master Chorale . He has performed at theMarlboro Music Festival , theBowdoin Music Festival , and theSan Francisco Chamber Music Festival . He has recordings on Orion and Town Hall Records. He has collaborated with many of today's most prominent artists, including Gil Shaham, Jeffrey Kahane, Sarah Chang, Joseph Kalichstein, Vladimir Feltsman, David Jolley, Mark Peskanov and Joshua Bell, among others. He is a member of the International Clarinet Society, the American Symphony Orchestra League, as well as the Chamber Music America.Clarinet Teaching
Yehuda Gilad is a very renowned teacher. Mr. Gilad is the head of Clarinet Studies at the University of Southern California. At USC he has developed one of the most sought-after clarinet studios in the world. In addition to his position at USC, Mr. Gilad is also a master teacher at the Colburn School of Music. His former students include members of the New York, Stockholm, Hong Kong, and Seoul Philharmonics, and the Cincinnati and Minnesota Orchestras. His students have also been prize winners in New York Philharmonic Young Artists Competition, Pasadena Instrumental Competition, and the Dos Hermanas Competition. Mr. Gilad has given master classes at King's College (Sweden), Curtis Institute, Mannes College, Manhattan School of Music, the Sibelius Academy, (Finland), and Winter Festival (Spain).
Conducting
Mr. Gilad is currently the music Director of the Zipper Orchestra. He is a frequent guest conductor on three continents. He has conducted the Colonial Symphony (New Jersey), the Malibu Strawberry Creek Music Festival, the Idyllwild Arts Academy, the Santa Monica Symphony, the Bonn Sinfonietta (Germany), and the
Jerusalem Music Center (Israel).During his time as Conductor and Music Director of the Colonial Symphony of New Jersey (1988-2003), he was praised for championing American and contemporary music. Under his leadership, the orchestra received the Distinguished Arts Organization Award from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its artistry and programming merits in 1995 and 1996. As a staunch advocate of arts education, Gilad elevated the Colonial Symphony into not only an outstanding regional orchestra, but also a teaching orchestra. Taking the orchestra on the road to various schools, and integrating it into the school curricula, Mr. Gilad was able to make large strides for music education.
Mr. Gilad's guest conducting appearances have brought him praise in the United States and throughout Europe. In 1987 he became the first Israeli-born conductor to perform in China, and he has since conducted numerous times in Beijing and Shanghai.
Additionally, he serves as Conductor and Music Director of the Colburn Orchestra, and the 20th Century Unlimited concert series in Santa Fe, New Mexico. From 1982 until 1988 Mr. Gilad was Music Director of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra.
Yehuda Gilad has played an instrumental role in the founding of several chamber ensembles and festivals. From 1982-1993 he directed the Malibu Strawberry Creek Music Festival. Mr. Gilad also founded the Yoav Chamber Ensemble which has performed at the Merkin and Carnegie Recital Halls, and the Colburn Woodwind Chamber Players, which toured Germany, China, and cities throughout the U.S.
Awards
Yehuda Gilad has earned countless accolades, including the Distinguished Teacher Award from the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, the Teacher of the Year Award from the Colburn School, the Israel-America Cultural Foundation Scholarship, and the Robert Simon Award in Music.
Dedicated to fostering increased public appreciation and support of classical music in the United States and in other countries, Mr. Gilad has appeared on various broadcasts, including NBC, CBS, WQXR, WMTR, KUSC, NJN, Cablevision, and the national television of Mainland China.
