Juan Surraco (born on August 14, 1987) is an Uruguayan football midfielder currently playing for Italian club Udinese, on loan at A.C. Ancona.

Biography

Juan Surraco was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and at an early age decided to dedicate himself to sports. He was scouted at fifteen by a team named Central Español. His talent caught the attention of the teams coach and he was soon a regular starter for the team in the Uruguayan football league, and simultaneously, he also impressed scouts for the Uruguayan National Football Team, though he would have to wait a few years and join the U-20 team after he turned eighteen. In 2006, his game also attracted clubs from larger leagues and more important backgrounds, and he soon accepted and signed a contract with the Italian club Udinese, where he now plays. On June 23, 2007, previous to the World Cup, he suffered trauma to his knee and at one point, his participation in the tournament was doubted, but eventually he played with the U-20 Uruguayan National Football Team during the FIFA 2007 U-20 World Cup, where they faced Spain and tied 2-2, Jordon and won 1-0, lost to Zambia 2-0, and were eliminated during the second round by the United States of America after they lost by a score of 2-1, with Surraco participating in all of these games except against Zambia, as did team mates Cavani and Suarez. He became popularly recognized after American defender Nathan Sturgis stripped him of the ball during the U.S.-Uruguay loss, and this a photograph of this has become viewed symbolically by press on an international level. On August 2007 he went on loan at Italian Serie B team F.C. Messina.

Trivia

*Curiously, he plays as a forward with his national team, and he also played as a forward when he was in Central Español, a club from his home country.
*He was simultaneously approached by Boca Juniors from Argentina and Udinese
*Juan Surraco refused offers from Boca Juniors because they said that he wouldn't play with the team initially, since they had already made an agreement with Arsenal, and if he accepted Boca Juniors offer, he would have been loaned out.
*Plays with number 5 with FC Messina, and with number 17 on his national team.
*Team Leader Officer (TLO) of team Uruguay U20 for the FIFA Youth World Cup Canada 2007, Roger Grinolds, is proud of Surraco's performance and integration on the field.
